5 Reasons Why Repairers Should Charge for / Get Reimbursed for Test Drives

Over the past year I have talked to hundreds, if not thousands of repairers and a vast majority stated they don’t properly perform or document test drives because they don’t get reimbursed for them.

In one of Mike Anderson’s “Who Pays for what Surveys” only 26% of respondents stated they were getting reimbursed for test drives.

And when it comes to labor times and operations, all three information providers state post-repair/calibration test drives are non-included operations

DID YOU KNOW that I-CAR, in its Post Repair ADAS testing class, requires test drives?

Throughout the class, I-CAR states that…

  • Post-repair/calibration testing of
    • Adaptive Cruise Control requires a test drive
    • Blind Spot Detection system requires a test drive
    • Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist Systems requires a test drive
    • Cross Traffic Alert Systems requires testing be performed in a parking lot
  • They have similar requirements for Collision Warning Systems, Park Assist Systems and other ADAS systems!
  • I-CAR has even created a post repair test drive checklist (See image below)
  • I-CAR even states that “whenever possible, use a video recording device to record the test drive and system function tests”.

What is amazing to me it despite I-CAR’s position on Post-repair/calibration test drives, a majority of I-CAR gold class shops DO NOT properly perform and document post-repair/calibration test drives and many insurers still DO NOT yet reimburse repairers for post-repair/calibration test drives on ADAS equipped vehicles!

I think the reason for this is test drives and test drive reimbursement conversations today are based on historical test drives procedures that were performed BA – Before ADAS

I think we can all agree ADAS equipped vehicle diagnostic, repair and testing procedures are MUCH different that NON-ADAS equipped vehicle and ADAS test drives MUST BE treated differently than NON-ADAS test drives!

With that said, here are 5 reasons why I believe repairers should charge for and get reimbursed for post-repair/calibration test drives on ADAS equipped vehicles…

  1. Post repair/calibration ADAS system testing requires specific speeds, times and mileage as well as visual, audible and vehicle response validations
  2. Post-repair/calibration test drives, also known as Dynamic Systems Verification, can take an hour or longer to complete
  3. From a safety and liability perspective, ADAS systems MUST operate as designed PRIOR to delivering a repaired/calibrated vehicle to a consumer…The only way to accomplish this is through a properly performed and documented test drive!
  4. ADAS test drives are OEM required procedures that need to be performed to validate a safe and proper repair
  5. I-CAR requires post-repair/calibration test drives on several ADAS systems in it’s ADAS Post Repair Testing Training
